To be eligible for membership in our Lodge or any South Carolina Masonic Lodge, a petitioner must:
  • Be a legal resident of South Carolina for the preceding 12 months; six months if active military.
  • Be male; 18 years of age or older.
  • Believe in the existence of a Supreme Being; atheists or doubters are not accepted.
  • Be a voluntary candidate for membership in the Masonic Fraternity; coming of his own free will.
  • Must be motivated to join for reasons unrelated to personal gain or profit.
  • Accepting of a favorable opinion of Freemasonry.
  • Desirous of receiving and sharing knowledge.
  • Be of a truthful personal constitution.
  • Be willing to conform to the Ancient Usages and Customs of the Fraternity.

Only individuals believed to be of the finest character are favorably considered for membership. Candidates must be willing to submit
to a background check and personally meet with Brothers from James Island Lodge No. 396 as part of the petitioning process.
